HARRIS ON THE BALLOT GIVES UNDECIDED VOTERS A PATH FORWARD

New survey data reveals American’s openness to an alternative.

JULY 30, 2024 — New survey data fielded just before and during President Biden’s withdrawal from the president’s race revealed that adding Harris’ name to the top of the ticket could move previously undecided voters disenfranchised by both candidates.

With Vice President Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee, voter’s presidential choices appear to have further solidified. Harris’ name at the top of the ticket decreased the proportion of voters who previously said they were undecided with Biden at the top of the ticket by 3%.* Among undecided voters who made up their minds, 27% now say they support Vice President Harris, with 10% now supporting former president Trump and 6% supporting a third-party candidate.

Meanwhile, Harris’s name at the top of the ticket appears to increase support for Democrats among younger voters and Black Americans. Specifically, Gen Z and Millennials are significantly more likely to support Vice President Harris as the presumptive nominee over President Biden. Among Gen Z voters, for example, 14% say they supported President Joe Biden while 30% support Harris as the Democratic nominee for president. Millennials are also 11% more likely to support Harris over President Biden. Looking closer at racial breakdowns, Black Americans are 6% more likely to support Harris over Biden (29% vs. 23%). Interestingly, men are also 9% more likely to support Harris over Biden.

While this survey was partially fielded before President Biden decided to drop out of the race on July 21, most Americans (62%) believe he should step down. Support for Biden stepping aside was highest among younger generations, including 70% of Gen Z voters and 65% of Millennials. White Americans were also more likely to support Biden stepping down (66%), while only 45% of Black voters said Biden should step aside.

Methodology

Citizen Data sampled N = 1,004 registered voters during July 19-22 with a margin of error of +/- 3.1%. Results are weighted on Party ID, race, age, gender, and education.
